Patience, Tolerance (& Assertiveness!) for the Holidays

Three personal characteristics to be especially aware of in our fast paced times: patience, tolerance, assertiveness- especially this Holiday season – and beyond!

Frustration tipping point
Do you need a patience tune-up? One common denominator among my anger management clients is impatience.

Impatience is more prevalent these days as pace is so fast and time seems to be wasted if things do not happen quickly-smoothly.  Waiting on line, waiting for anything-anyone is more of a chore than ever before.  Everyone’s frustration tipping point is individual – and when levels are too high topples over into anger-violence or suppression-depression.  This season – holidays – is even more important than ever to be mindful of being tolerant and patient.  Good luck!!

EFT for Holiday Stress Release-Relief!

Many feel extra stress in this season of holidays. Whether you are hosting a family dinner or traveling to one, you may find yourself experiencing some feelings of anxiety or apprehension in preparation for the holiday gathering. This is especially true for “caregivers” and those in the “sandwich” generation.

EFT Tapping Scripts for the Holidays

Before you get started, choose a number 1-10 (10 the highest) your perceived rate of stress on this topic Here is my simple tapping script for this:

1) 3 Set up phrases (karate chop or massage on upper chest).

    • Even though I am feeling so stressed about going to __ for the holidays, I fully and deeply love & respect myself
    • Even though I know this happens to me every year and it’s ridiculous to become so stressed, I fully and deeply love and respect myself.
  • Even though I know the holidays are about gratefulness & peace (inner and outer!)) and I feel full of dread, I know I can get thru this.

Check in with your stress level about the holidays and I bet it’s much lower.

Be Assertive: Saying No Effectively

The ability to communicate ‘no’ really reflects that you are in the driver’s seat of your own life, and can give gives you a sense of empowerment. How to do it most effectively?

A study in the Journal of Consumer Research by Professor Patrick and Henrik Hagtvedt found that saying “I don’t” as opposed to “I can’t” allowed participants to extract themselves from unwanted commitments.

While “I can’t” sounds like an excuse that’s up for debate, “I don’t” implies you’ve established certain rules for yourself, suggesting conviction and stability and are more effective in getting your point across.

There are a few other ways you can get more comfortable with saying no.

It’s a lot easier to be assertive with a stranger selling you something than it is when, say, your pleading co-worker asks for a ride to the airport. Get comfortable with your assertiveness when it’s easy so you’ll be prepared when there’s more pressure.

It’s easier to say no when you know exactly how to say it,so come up with a few anchor phrases for different situations. “No, I don’t buy from solicitors” for door-to-door salespeople, for example. “No, I don’t go out during the week” for co-workers who want to go on a drinking binge on a Monday night.

When you have these phrases ready, you don’t have to waste time wavering over an excuse. And you start to develop a reflexive behavior of saying no.

Ages 18-34 are often stereotyped as “coddled” and “entitled” – and are stepping up to management positions in all areas of business, healthcare and non-profit.  They join Gen X (ages 35 – 50) in replacing retiring BabyBoomers and stepping up the pace and technology.  They also have been observed to respond to texts faster than voicemail and often email and are extremely vocal about flexible work schedules.  What’s an older not yet retired Boomer to do? At the very least take a few days to learn and perfect texting skills, even if you only use it for the workplace.  Multigenerational workplace may need additional trainings to understand styles of communication, to reduce stress and anger, increase tolerance and patience.

DSC02197I know that sometimes my family is annoyed  with my tendency to do things immediately as they come up (even though as I’ve grown older I’ve developed more patience and perhaps procrastination:)).
So, when I sat down and wrote out a huge list of To-Do’s that related to the four major projects I am working on now, all with approaching due dates.  I found the list  to be revealing. Did I really have that much to do in so little time and in so many different areas of my life?
I decided to use EFT  Emotional Freedom Techniques and systematically applied it to each item on my list.  The following day that I saw the effects. What happened then was eye opening!:
• When I looked over the topics of things I had to get done I felt so different about doing them that it was hard to believe that this was possible.
• I was doing them, one after the other.
• It was no big deal to do them.
• I didn’t feel sorry for myself for having to “do the impossible”.
• There was no self-pity (and I hadn’t even realized I’d had any self-pity before!)
• My carefully constructed rationale for not doing these things was gone. It had vanished.
• I couldn’t believe this was “me” acting this way. Something basic had changed.

Growing up and beyond I became disillusioned with this statement, hearing it often from Mom.

I heard “everything will be alright” when it wasn’t going that way at all and looked like no chance of improving.  Later, as a young mom myself, I decided not to make that a recurring theme in our house, to be “realistic” and explore consequences and results of actions in different ways.  Later, when my daughters were into their teens I explained this lack of “pollyana” philosophy as a direct result of disillusionment from Grandma’s statements.

Since then, I’ve explored many philosophies/spiritual teachings/ “self-development” theories and am learning more each day. Patience and tolerance often increase as we mature.  I  find myself resonating with the statement that is repeated several times in the movie “The Marigold Hotel:

“Everything will be alright in the end…and trust me, if it’s not all right, it’s not the end.” 

It’s about hope and faith added into the mix.  I understand now that is what Mom and Bob Marley really meant… behind the simplicity of the words.

Ah…Patience! The opposite is feeling frustration-anger – being judgemental-reacting- ‘nuf said’ Do we gain gift the gift of being Patient as we get older? Meditation helps !
