My colleague, the unstoppable Frankie Picasso has an amazing inspirational interview below with Fran Silverman; enjoy!:

Q  – Roughly 10 years ago you lived through a horrific motorcycle accident where you sustained breaks to both of your femurs, hip, pelvis tibula and fibula. During your 5-1/2 months in the hospital you worried about your three children, lost your job in a corporate restructuring, went through a marital divorce and lost your beloved dog.

Yet you didn’t let anything stop you. You picked yourself up, got on your laptop and worked toward an online certificate in coaching. You always maintained a positive outlook.

Was this certificate your dream before the accident?

No Fran, coaching wasn’t even a career that I had even heard of although unbeknownst to me, I have always done it. I had wanted to become a Spiritual Psychotherapist but after seeing one, she convinced me that Coaching was the NEW Career path I needed to take, so I took her advice. It certainly “FIT” felt like I was home.

The average person would be depressed from what you went through. Yet you turned your negative into a positive. Not everyone is able to get over their heartbreaks as you have done. What is your secret?

Let’s rephrase that Fran , shall we? I think that EVERY ONE has the capability of overcoming much more than they think they can, but until we are put to the test, none of us really know our limits. I have always been an optimist, and a dreamer and somehow have always had the confidence in my ability to create whatever I vision. Perhaps what others are lacking is just the skill set and role models I have been fortunate to have had in my life. Specifically my father. He is a survivor and that is something I suppose I get from him but also something I really admire in him. In fact, I have just started a new Radio show titled Crazy Good Radio that I call a Negative Intervention. It is all Positive News, Guests, stories, music..etc. I want to show listeners HOW to pay Positive Attention and have a Positive Intention. It means you will have to look at the world in a different way, through a different lense. Being Positive is a CHOICE that I make. It is a disservice to waste ANY of the amazing time we have here on Earth wallowing in self pity or negativity. We can do that later when we are dead.( but we won’t).

You state that your past is not your potential for potential has no bounds. “Choose to break from your self-imposed limits,” you urge. “Use your imagination to create a life of Endless possibility.” Well, for some of us without imagination and self-imposed limits it’s harder to do. What do you suggest?

Great Question. When you cannot ‘vision’ your way to a new or different lifestyle or situation, that is when you hire need to hire an expert like a Coach. Life Coach’s don’t tell people what to do or how to live their lives. What they DO offer is really GREAT questions that will help an individual remember and or/ reframe what they really want in their life. How they want to live and how to get there. Sometimes all we need is someone to listen to us, Champion us, dream with us and keep pushing us to the other side. Most of us live with self imposed limits. Society has set us up that way. We are socialized to act and think in a certain way from the time we are born. Either we are good little girls and boys or we are bad. Children who are often told NO, they aren’t good at something (whether right or wrong) find that those labels go deep into their subconscious, affecting their self esteem and self image. Family, Teachers, Friends and Lovers all have had their influence on us. The good news is that we can change and repair any damage starting with acknowledging that is what you want to do.  The Chinese have two characters for Change. One is Danger , the other Opportunity.  I love this because it is so true. We cannot have the wonderful things we want without leaving our comfort zone, IE The DANGER. But if we do, we get the REWARD- Opportunity.

You are the founder of an organization designed to bring together the resources necessary for positive change throughout the world. Your words say it all: “I believe that often we bring limited thinking and negativity to problem solving. There are always solutions but sometimes they call for a bit more effort, knowledge and creative thinking than we are willing or able to expend.”

About Eileen:
I’ve overcome obstacles in areas of my life… After battling colitis for many years, I found a holistic approach to healing myself that worked wonderfully together with my medical care. My participation in modalities incorporating positive thinking, affirmations, relaxation breathing, exercise and stretching were instrumental to my conquering colitis and became part of my Moving Meditation® Fitness audio program.

16 years ago, I was involved in a pedestrian accident in which my right foot was run over by a van, which left me with five breaks in a bone in my foot. During my recovery I was asked by a local physician to help write a curriculum for a new stress-reduction program he was developing. He encouraged me to read John Kabot-Zinn’s Full Catastrophe Living” and Herbert Benson’s “The Relaxation Response”, which turned my negative attitude towards recovery around and were catalysts to my healing and I was able to teach Hatha yoga for this course within a few months.

I was dealing with a severely broken foot, which had huge amounts of tissue damage. During this time of healing, with my prognosis unknown,I decided to become a trained bio-feedback therapist as well as work in that field in order to have career “back-up” because of my unknown prognosis.

The mind-body connection, the autogenic and relaxation training plus counseling techniques contributed significantly to my own healing; a powerful reinforcement of the power of the mind-body connection. I was also greatly impacted during this time by professional training at the Omega Institute with Dr. Kabat-Zinn, who founded the Center for Mindfulness Based Stress-Reduction Programs at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. The training was pivotal in integrating all the work I was doing and clarified my goal to be trained as a professional coach. I then went on to the Corporate Coach University, a branch of Coach U and recognized by the International Coach Federation.

Since then I have been and continue to be inspired by the impact people can have on their lives when they choose to manage and reduce stress. I am honored to be a part of that process in anyway that I can.

I’ve authored the article below (text only): April Millenium Magazine p.10:

The concept of expansion works wonderfully with improving self esteem!
Imagine a drop of water (self esteem) expanding into a puddle, then into a

lake!

Pond : Walden Pond

Then imagine yourself standing on the shore, throwing a pebble into

the lake and seeing the expansion of the concentric circles.

Here are some general tips to improve your self esteem. Feel free to adapt:
  • Be kind and helpful. People appreciating you will make you feel better about yourself.
  • List all of your positive traits and characteristics.
  • Expand on the list with details and give a few concrete examples of
  • Read the list out loud often.
  • Create affirmations from the list and attach in places you’re sure to   see them every day.
  • Smile as much as possible even when you don’t feel like it. Smiling is great for your mood and it improves your look immensely!
  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Exercise and eat well so you feel good about your physical body.
  • Reward yourself each time you reach a goal for improving self-esteem or any other goal that you set for yourself as long as it’s not self destructive like binging on fatty foods.
  • Acknowledge if you’re having difficulty doing any of the above and seek out a life coach.

Misery Loves Company
A big issue that blocks improving self esteem is taking
things “personally” when it’s not indicated, ie: owning someone else’s
misplaced anger. Usually the person blaming you is dealing with their own
problem and simply wants company – like misery.
For this reason, make sure to surround yourself with positive people. If you
are living or working with someone negative, try building a “shield” around
yourself. Visualize yourself surrounded by a protective white light energy

that any inappropriate negativity directed at you bounces off.

and leave the scene – physically.
Once physically removed from the situation, take long deep breaths and
reconnect with your affirmations. Breath in through your nose, belly rising
before your chest, say an affirmation or a few key words from it like a
mantra and exhale slowly, releasing any negative energy that may have
touched you. Repeat this until you feel calm, confident and fortified for
whatever lies ahead. You may also do the breath affirmation-release while
walking briskly- which will also work towards improving self-esteem.
Another modality that can release negative energy is Emotional Freedom
Techniques (EFT), an amazing practice based on meridian tapping together
with powerful coaching and specific language.
As with almost any “daunting” task, when you are motivated to succeed and
have the intention to expand and energize your being, improving self-esteem
is easy! When you boost your self esteem, you boost your life as a whole!

According to a US News and World Report poll, sixty percent of Americans said that President Obama’s inauguration made them feel “more hopeful about the next four years.” Even though the economy’s growth charts are hitting bottom, various news outlets are reporting a surge in spirit.

So, what’s going on? Is optimism an unwise strategy leaving us unprepared? Is it really safe to be an optimist through doom and gloom? Optimism is about working creatively with potential, not being limited by the challenges. It’s about the glass half full and not deluding ourselves that the glass is filled with champagne. The key to optimism is tuning in to how we interpret the events playing out in our own lives. Are we looking for the opportunities and making predictions that we can realize with our own actions? The choice is ours. It’s about thinking accurately, making calculated risks and when things go wrong, seeing the setbacks as temporary. It’s about being innovative, flexible and resilient and being able to move forward from a fall. Optimism is the mindset that encourages sound and practical ingenuity and shines a light: for yourself and others.

Twelve Tips to Safely “Go Optimistic”:

• Optimism is not about sugar coating the truth. Lying gets you into trouble- even with yourself!
• Think of possibilities from different perspectives.
• Stop talking in absolutes. Eliminates the words nothing and never from self talk.
• Set specific goals that are attainable.
• When you are feeling down due to personal circumstances, take stock of your strengths.
• Lower the stakes, not the standards: Don’t have your whole life riding on the outcome of one event
• Savor small triumphs, steps leading to the bigger picture.
• Set aside self blame and learn from your mistakes.
• Surround yourself with positive people
• Do not read, watch or listen to the news if you become “too upset”.
• Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your feelings.
• Cultivate generosity and gratitude.

We are the only ones who can control our attitude. By focusing on what is strong and enduring and seeing our potential, we can take calculated risks and overcome challenges.
