I recently was on a Sicilian holiday with my husband  between family visiting in London and Amsterdam. Everything was well planned and going wonderfully – we visited the beautiful coastal resort Taormina, Palermo and then ancient Greek ruins in Agrigento. The rental car was fine and our European GPS working well until…

We couldn’t find our hotel and got a “no matches” message when I called – I had purchased an international phone card in the UK. We decided to travel back to the airport that eve instead of very early morning and booked a nice hotel near the airport. starting out refreshed after a light supper. Soon it was torrentially raining and dark while driving on mountain roads.. A few hours into this nightmare and many wrong exits of traffic circles or gps mistakes, we found ourselves in a very small town. I actually was ready to spend the night in the car or a bed and breakfast if it existed: I had given up, unusual for me. And, I was getting sick…caught an upper respiratory virus from the London crew. So we stopped at a bar with a petrol station and I asked the drinking gentlemen if anyone was English speaking?  Turned out one whipped out his iPhone to maps and as we spoke into it translation appeared for directions.  Recent experience with the dark rainy mountain roads did not leave us hopeful, so another fine fellow said we could follow him to a rest stop near the auto route entrance. Whew! Thirty minutes later, voila! On the road to the airport hotel.

Resolved: no night – rain – mountain driving! even if I’m the passenger.

Continue to travel with international phone cards.

Grateful: We got there safe ‘n’ sound, treacherous u turns and all.

Do you know that people who are grateful cannot be depressed! Here are a few things to do to harness gratefulness and to stay centered , another necessary ingredient for being happy:

● Set aside a few minutes every day and think about five large or small things you’re grateful for. Write them down if you like. Be specific and remember what each thing means to you. Review them before going to sleep and on awakening.

● Take “grateful walks” in nature, noticing all the wonders. Create a grateful mantra for yourself to repeat as you walk-breathe. ie: inhale love 4 steps, exhale self doubt 4 steps. Inhale confidence, exhale fear.

● Throughout the day take short breaks, conduct internal traffic control: check in how are you doing emotionally-physically and stretch and or do relaxation breathing.  Exercise.

● Create positive visualizations for SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely.

● Learn EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to help combat negativity, gain

confidence and attain goals.

 Dear Friends & Colleagues,
This has been a trying time for our country, especially the Northeastern US.  Many are still reeling from Storm Sandy and now grieving Sandy Hook…  

This is traditionally a time of celebration and I hope you can carry on despite a sense of loss or  sadness.   If you are experiencing  extreme overwhelm,  being extra mindful of the following helps: 

  • Stay away from the news and keep it away from children too.
  • Make grateful lists to Read, Breathe,   Chant.  Place them on post-its around the house.
  • Play or spend time with the children more than usual- it does everyone good!! 
  • Exercise, eat healthfully and get enough sleep no matter what!
  • Let’s  be “Rockin’ in the Free World” (Neil Young) this Holiday Season and celebrate our abundance- whatever that means to you.

 To all my friends recently touched by destruction and dire circumstances, as our collective prayers, thoughts and actions aid recovery from Superstorm Sandy, and to all of my friends not  in the New York Metro area, let’s remember we can always accelerate resilience in spirit with these simple steps:

• Set specific goals that are attainable.  Take baby steps to get there when necessary.
• When you are feeling down due to personal circumstances, take stock of your strengths and positive circumstances and BE GRATEFUL!!
• Surround yourself with positive people as much as possible.
• Do not read, watch or listen to the news if you become “too upset”.

You are the only one who can control your attitude. By focusing on what is strong and enduring and seeing potential, you can take calculated risks and overcome challenges .


It takes an open, creative mind free from anxiety to pick up on opportunities.


They are out there ready to be accessed by your positive and resilient radar!!

Sandy's Path of Destruction Horror stories, boats in houses, boardwalks in front yards, no power means no heat too; it’s cold in NY now.  I’m booting up in nearby town of Rockville Centre that has the business district hopping with electric.  A sense of community, repair, boredom, hopelessness and overwhelm for some.  Homelessness, shelters and evacuations are no fun.  Uprooted and possessions gone- a lot of that on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, downtown Manhattan, Staten Island & New Jersey.  So, if you’re simply bored with no power, no work happening and have your stuff and your peeps-well then- let’s have big gratefulness positive energy happening.  You’ve got you!! And that’s a lot.  Here’s a few things to do:

Light some candles and meditate- become one with a flame for a few minutes!

Visit someone by bicycle (save gasoline, which is a additional problem now)

Read a book(s)

Clean out some shelves

Have a post hurricane party!


Still no power in my home; I’m at Panera’s RVC now.

We’re fortunate to have hot water, stove top and my neighbor’s generator hooked to the fridge a few hours a day.
