Patience, Tolerance (& Assertiveness!) for the Holidays

Three personal characteristics to be especially aware of in our fast paced times: patience, tolerance, assertiveness- especially this Holiday season – and beyond!

Frustration tipping point
Do you need a patience tune-up? One common denominator among my anger management clients is impatience.

Impatience is more prevalent these days as pace is so fast and time seems to be wasted if things do not happen quickly-smoothly.  Waiting on line, waiting for anything-anyone is more of a chore than ever before.  Everyone’s frustration tipping point is individual – and when levels are too high topples over into anger-violence or suppression-depression.  This season – holidays – is even more important than ever to be mindful of being tolerant and patient.  Good luck!!

EFT for Holiday Stress Release-Relief!

Many feel extra stress in this season of holidays. Whether you are hosting a family dinner or traveling to one, you may find yourself experiencing some feelings of anxiety or apprehension in preparation for the holiday gathering. This is especially true for “caregivers” and those in the “sandwich” generation.

EFT Tapping Scripts for the Holidays
(you may download free diagram for tapping points here)

Before you get started, choose a number 1-10 (10 the highest) your perceived rate of stress on this topic Here is my simple tapping script for this:

1) 3 Set up phrases (karate chop or massage on upper chest).

    • Even though I am feeling so stressed about going to __ for the holidays, I fully and deeply love & respect myself
    • Even though I know this happens to me every year and it’s ridiculous to become so stressed, I fully and deeply love and respect myself.
  • Even though I know the holidays are about gratefulness & peace (inner and outer!)) and I feel full of dread, I know I can get thru this.

round of tapping: (see points in link above): so stressed with holidays
round of tapping: being grateful
round of tapping: get thru it!

Check in with your stress level about the holidays and I bet it’s much lower.

Be Assertive: Saying No Effectively

The ability to communicate ‘no’ really reflects that you are in the driver’s seat of your own life, and can give gives you a sense of empowerment. How to do it most effectively?

A study in the Journal of Consumer Research by Professor Patrick and Henrik Hagtvedt found that saying “I don’t” as opposed to “I can’t” allowed participants to extract themselves from unwanted commitments.

While “I can’t” sounds like an excuse that’s up for debate, “I don’t” implies you’ve established certain rules for yourself, suggesting conviction and stability and are more effective in getting your point across.

There are a few other ways you can get more comfortable with saying no.

It’s a lot easier to be assertive with a stranger selling you something than it is when, say, your pleading co-worker asks for a ride to the airport. Get comfortable with your assertiveness when it’s easy so you’ll be prepared when there’s more pressure.

It’s easier to say no when you know exactly how to say it,so come up with a few anchor phrases for different situations. “No, I don’t buy from solicitors” for door-to-door salespeople, for example. “No, I don’t go out during the week” for co-workers who want to go on a drinking binge on a Monday night.

When you have these phrases ready, you don’t have to waste time wavering over an excuse. And you start to develop a reflexive behavior of saying no.

Being assertive is a core communication skill. Being assertive means that you express yourself effectively and stand up for your point of view, while also respecting the rights and beliefs of others. Being assertive can also help boost your self-esteem and earn others’ respect.

Assertiveness can help you control stress and anger and improve coping skills. Do you need help learning assertive behavior and communication?

Life throws many curved balls – meant to be intercepted . I’ve been hearing the term often lately, from clients and background summer sounds of TV baseball announcers…

Successful interception of life’s curve balls takes clear vision, focus, intention and correct action. When curved balls are directed at you (or it simply feels that way) you may need extra help-guidance and new strategies to go in a different direction, become unstuck, release tension, let go of past mistakes and foster forgiveness (to yourself as well as others), sometimes within a short timeline. EFT Emotional Freedom Technique is a forerunner in this field and when combined with Stress Management – a homerun!

There are really five ways you can be happier- there is an  abundance of research on happiness and positive psychology documents this.

Happy people generally are more forgiving, helpful, and charitable, having better self-control, and are more tolerant of frustration than unhappy people.

A 30 percent increase in one spouse’s happiness boosts the other spouse’s happiness, while a drop in one spouse’s happiness drags the other down.

 Strengths Linked to Happiness

Certain strengths are most closely linked to happiness. They include gratitude, hope, vitality, curiosity, and love. These strengths are so important that they’re worth cultivating and applying in your daily life, even if they don’t come naturally to you.  Research suggests that  these qualities can help you weather the routine ups and downs of life and also build resilience for times of greater difficulty.

Reap the benefits of your strengths,

First self awareness is needed to know what they are! Unfortunately, according to a British study, only about one-third of people have a useful understanding of their strengths. If something comes easily, you may take it for granted and not identify it as a strength. If you are not sure of your strengths, you can identify them by asking someone you respect who knows you well, by noticing what people compliment you on, and by thinking about what comes most easily to you.  An additional route to gratitude and boosting happiness is placing your attention on pleasure as it occurs, consciously enjoying the experience as it unfolds.  Multitasking can be the antithesis of this.

Appreciating the treasures in life, big and small, helps build happiness.

Need help figuring it out? FREE phone 15 minute consult: 516 623 4353  www.balanceandpower.com

Yeats:  “We are happy when we are growing.”

Did you know that the brain is stimulated by surprise?

Samuel Jackson: “The business of the wise man is to be happy”.

Research shows that acting in an outgoing, talkative, adventurous or assertive way makes people- even introverts-feel happier.

Making and sticking to a decision is a source of happiness because it gives you a sense of control, of efficacy, of responsibility.

At time of financial stress, taking control of your finances- even symbolically- can boost your mood because you’re taking steps to control and improve your situation.

Gratitude is important to happiness.  Studies show that consistently grateful people are happier and more satisfied with their lives; they even feel more physically healthy and spend more time exercising.

Gratitude fosters forbearance- it’s harder to feel disappointed with someone when you are feeling grateful toward him or her.

Gratitude connects you to the natural world, because one of the easiest things to feel grateful for is the beauty of nature.

Studies show that happier people are more likely to help other people.

Happier people are more interested in social problems.  They do more volunteer work and contribute more to charity.

One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make other people happy.

One of the best ways to make other people happy is to be happy yourself!

Publius Syrus: “No man is happy who does not think himself so”

Saint Therese:  I take care to appear happy and especially to be so.”

A small child typically laughs more than four hundred times a day, and an adult- seventeen times.

Laughter can boost immunity and lower blood pressure and cortisol levels and increases people’s tolerance for pain.

Often a laughter response to someone’s  exasperation turns the situation around.  A story from Saint Therese:  p.264 The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

Tolstoy: ” Nothing, can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness.”

I am a peak performance success coach empowering individuals and organizations SOAR! to their highest levels of happiness and success.

I’ll be happy to help you with this- call me for a FREE consult:

Stress is cumulative.  Extreme frustration and stress left to fester  can easily lead to inappropriate outbursts of anger violent  or depressive episodes  on the other side of a continuum. When you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, unappreciated, angry  it’s important to take time out to release, relax and recharge. When you are experiencing difficulty meeting multiple job responsibilities and target dates, juggling personal and business responsibilities and having relationship challenges it’s important to take time throughout each day to recharge.  The suggestions below will have positive effects on your happiness and wellbeing.

Here are some quick and easy suggestions to reduce stress right now:

Listen to Moving Meditation®

Track #2: Rythmic Movement

Track #7: Guided Relaxation

Breathe Deeply – Take 3 cleansing breaths by inhaling deeply through the nose, belly rising. Sustain the inhalation, then exhale (through mouth, belly deflating), making the exhalation forceful and sustained, like a sigh. This temporarily changes your physiology and can be the beginning of a sustained relaxation.

Walk – A five-minute walk can begin to shift your mood; walking for a longer time has additional benefits!

Connect With Nature – A great stress reducer!

Listen to Music – It can definitely be a mood changer!

Take a ‘Mini-Vacation’ – Lie down or put your feet up and just be! (Listen to Track #7, above)

Say No – Don’t overextend yourself!

Take a ‘Joybreak’ – Do something different that you enjoy such as reading a magazine, calling a friend, writing a thank-you note, stepping outdoors!

Stretch – Yoga or office yoga releases physical tension and clears the mind! (Listen to Track #2, above)

De-Clutter – Decrease ‘visual noise’!

Allow Time – Performance has variables and interruptions are inevitable!

Think Positive – Let go of self-sabotaging language and worry!

Smile and Laugh – Proven to ease anxiety and reduce stress!

Foster Forgiveness of Self and Others – Create inner peace by regularly practicing a loving-kindness meditation.

Practice Gratitude
