As a normal part of life, stress enables us to get things done. If left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems. Stress causes a disruption in the flow of vital energy through the body. These energetic imbalances can throw off the immune system or cause symptoms of pain, sleep disturbances, abnormal digestion, headaches, menstrual irregularities, aggravation of already troublesome health conditions and, over time, more serious illnesses can develop.

Stress is cumulative.  Stressful situations that last over a long period of time can create an ongoing low-level stress that puts continual pressure on the nervous system, increasing activity, and can cause the overproduction of hormones. The extra stress hormones over an extended period of time may wear out the body’s reserves, lead to fatigue, depression, a weakened immune system, and a host of serious physical and psychological ailments.

Some signs of stress overload include:

– anxiety or panic attacks
– feelings of constant pressure, hassled and hurried
– irritability and moodiness
– physical symptoms such as stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain
– allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma
– problems sleeping
– overindulgence in food, alcohol, smoking, or drugs
– sadness or depression

Stress is often the cause of illness and the deterioration of health. Finding a release valve for your stress can help you stay healthy. According to research, stress, frustration, and unresolved anger can play an important part in throwing the immune system off and allowing pathogens to affect the body.

While it isn’t always possible to remove the external forces causing stress, the ability to effectively deal with stress is a choice. Take time for yourself to cultivate the energy you need to handle your stress more skillfully and effectively.

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is often described as the tapping technique and is a powerful stress reduction tool that is proving to be extremely effective in a wide variety of conditions in which stress can be a causative or aggravating factor.

Research continues to expand its evidence of effectiveness for conditions as anxiety, PTSD, phobias, suppression of cravings and more. EFT is an approach that incorporates multiples aspects of the mind and body through the stimulation of the meridian energy system that has been utilized in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture for thousands of years.

This season, Less Stress for the Holidays, Managing Time & Focusing to Attain Your Goals have been well received topics in my workshop venues. I’ve come to the personal-professional conclusion that what all participants relate to for an easier season is keeping things simple.

I’m an advocate of this philosophy year round- and I think we all go through phases and times where the “complicated version” is attractive. Extra seasonal demands point to staying with the basics and what matters most. “Being stressed” is about feeling overwhelmed and out of control- and sometimes circumstances are beyond our control. We always have a choice, however, about how we cope with these circumstances.

I work with positive psychology/energy modality EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, tapping) and am a certified practitioner.

Here is EFT for Holiday Stress Relief and for Caregiver Holiday Stress…

EFT for Holiday Stress Relief:  
Before you get started, choose a number 1-10 (10 the highest) that is your perceived rate of stress on this topic.

Here is my simple tapping script for this:

Set up phrase:
(karate chop or massage on “sore spot” below collarbone – upper chest either side)

  • Even though I am feeling soo stressed about going to __ for the holidays, I fully and deeply love & respect myself
  • Even though I know this happens to me every year and it’s ridiculous to become so stressed, I fully and deeply love and respect myself.
  • Even though I know the holidays are about gratefulness & peace (inner and outer!) and I feel full of dread, I know I can get thru this.

Round of tapping (see points in photo above): so stressed with holidays
Round of tapping: being grateful
Round of tapping: get thru it!
Check in with your stress level about the holidays and I bet it’s much lower. 

Caregiver EFT Holiday Stress (add on to above or stand alone)

Set up phrase:

  • Even though I feel like I’m being pulled in 10 directions and may be losing my mind I fully and deeply love and respect myself.
  • Even though I’ll feel guilty if I don’t visit, am not with ______on Thanksgiving, I fully and deeply love and respect myself.
  • Even though I really want to spend Thanksgiving with_____ and I’m having dinner for (or going to)_______, I fully and deeply love and respect myself.

Round of tapping: 10 directions Round of tapping: losing my mind
Round of tapping: Guilt 2 rounds of tapping: I’ll be OK
Round of tapping: ______ (subject of caregiving) will be fine
Round of tapping:  Once a year

Now, check in with your stress level about the holidays and I bet it’s much lower. Repeat this everyday.  You may substitute words as needed. Visualize positive celebrations , take time for yourself and keep up the gratefulness lists.

10 Tips to Stop Overthinking

1. Awareness is the beginning of change. Any time you find yourself doubting or feeling stressed or anxious, step back and look at the situation and how you’re responding. In that moment of awareness is the seed of the change you want to make.

2. Don’t think of what can go wrong, but what can go right. In many cases, overthinking is caused by a single emotion: fear. When you focus on all the negative things that might happen, it’s easy to become paralyzed. Next time you sense that you starting to spiral in that direction, stop. Visualize all the things that can go right and keep those thoughts present and up front.

Most successful people are less likely to be perfectionists as perfectionism impedes performance.  Facebook’s headquarters had “Done is better than perfect” painted on the wall. Imagine if Facebook had waited until it was “perfect” to launch. It probably wouldn’t be around today.

Perfectionism is often born of extra demanding parents or former schoolteachers.  While perfectionism is a “learned habit” it can be an “unlearned habit”.   Perfectionists spend more time than necessary on tasks that don’t require the extra care. One issue that perfectionists often run into is not understanding that all tasks don’t require the same amount of effort and time.  Consequently, they feel overwhelmed from not having enough time in the day.  When you’re so overwhelmed by work and anxiety, you can’t get anything done, and you become trapped in a loop of unhealthy thoughts, impulses, and behaviors.

A combination of coaching and EFTtapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can help you break the cycle and transform procrastination (often a product of perfectionism) too!!

Perhaps you do not even know it…or feel it heating up and it’s not too hot yet so you just want to relax…

Well, before it becomes too hot to handle, check in with yourself – what is your body feeling?  Can you take a few deep breaths and notice more?

The hot water you’re sitting in is often full of anger, regret, shame, fear, guilt, anxiety, stress and more. As you may know and most of the medical industry is now discovering, when we have physical problems they are almost always connected with our emotions. Emotional Freedom Technique comes to the rescue and is showing astounding transformative results. EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is often described as the tapping technique and is a powerful stress reduction tool that is proving to be extremely effective in a wide variety of conditions in which stress can be a causative or aggravating factor.

Research continues to expand its evidence of effectiveness for conditions as anxiety, PTSD, phobias, suppression of cravings and more. EFT is an approach that incorporates multiples aspects of the mind and body through the stimulation of the meridian energy system that has been utilized in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture for thousands of years. When these points are tapped on by the client him-herself, while the practitioner is verbalizing the challenge in language that reflects what the client has revealed , the stress hormone cortisol is released and the stress reducing hormone serotonin is produced and sent to the amygdala which  is the integrative center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation.  Research has shown most of us do not have enough serotonin produced in our bodies.  Pharmaceutically manufactured serotonin is in many antidepressants.  Many physical ailments and conditions are also reversed or lessened with EFT, sometimes as a “by product” of the emotional stress reduction, and sometimes directly.  Cravings may be eliminated or significantly reduced and weight loss evolves naturally with the release of cortisol, which is the stress hormone that lands in the belly. Yet another wonderful effect EFT has is increased circulation.  As is currently said “in the field”, “Tap on anything!”
