Researchers used to think that emotions were purely mental expressions, generated by the brain alone. We now know that this is not true; emotions have as much to do with the body as they do with the brain. Of all the bodily systems, the heart has been found to play a particularly important role in emotional experience, especially anger. Science has discovered how ordinary people can easily learn to shift their heart rhythms and bring their emotions quickly into balance. As they do so, a remarkable thing happens. Their feelings and perceptions change. They break free of old emotional patterns.
Research has shown that one of the most powerful factors that affect our heart’s changing rhythm is our feelings and emotions. Emotions have as much to do with the body as they do with the brain. In general, emotional stress – including emotions such as anger, frustration, and anxiety, give rise to heart rhythm patterns that appear irregular and erratic. This can be likened to driving a car with one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the brake at the same time – creating a jerky ride, burning more gas and not good for your car! Likewise, stressful emotions can cause our body to operate inefficiently, deplete our energy, and produce extra wear and tear on our whole system. This is especially true if stress and negative emotions are prolonged or experienced often.
