Hi Everyone!

I was on the airplane 3 nights ago, a return flight from European family fun and travels- and found myself contemplating how growing up in Brooklyn near Coney Island may have been a blessing in disguise-

I became fearless going on the “scary” rides even though I never would go on the parachute- there were known accidents on that one and I was very safety conscious- Mom was a worrier.

Going in the front car of the roller coaster, approaching the top (with friends of course ) and looking at the big drop ahead gave no time to do anything except scream & hold on tight! So it went through the fun summer months. Thinking back over the years, I did many courageous things and not much scared me. Here are a few that got me thinking back to the scary rides…:

•Walking on hot coals while on a mind body spirit retreat in Santa Fe ( first time away from my young children too). We had lots of prep time and when it was my turn I was ready. Awesome.

  • Skiing. This wasn’t worth it for me; injured and it could’ve been worse… Later on I took up cross country- fun!
  • Para sailing Puerto Vallarta: This was the ultimate overcome of fear of heights for me. I was sitting on the beach for several days meditating (and drinking pina coladas) and surprised myself with the conscious decision into action. Very challenging and I did look down a few times when I wasn’t looking at the mountain.
  • Riding a bicycle in Amsterdam last week.  Steve and I were visiting our daughter who lives there with her Spanish boyfriend. The city is really set up for cycling but I convinced myself it would be tough, it’s difficult enough being a pedestrian there- ‘cause of all the bicycles! My daughter went off riding with my husband and after a while came back to get me- they knew I would love it and it was only a few blocks to Vondel Park. Steve and I visited that city 40 years ago and rode our bikes around that we bought in Italy.
  • Back on the trip forty years ago- we rode our bikes out of Florence (where we bought the racers- and mine was a boy’s with the bar- the only kind made at the time) and I scared myself with a coughing attack that precipitated me throwing the pack(s) of Marlboros out- which was scary ‘cause I couldn’t imagine not smoking “cold turkey” which I succeeded at. And it was difficult- maybe not scary- to totally change our travel plans so that we went back to the city and got the bikes on trains that rode out of the seven hills, through the Alps and landed us in Germany to enjoy the rolling hills (so we could use all the gears ) and along the Rhine onto Holland. Of course we stopped to eat and sleep in foreign lands- sometimes in hostels and sometimes in the forest, scary and amazing.

I’m happy to be telling you all now. When friends and strangers comment on (both) our daughters living in Europe – I smile and am happy we brought them up with roots and wings - and the ability to navigate the scary and unknown.

• The scariest thing of all for me was 9/11 and the period following that. Were we really OK? Then it became more than me and being empty nested- yes our daughters already just in Europe- and it was much more than getting off the coach and back onto the treadmill and back into the gym- even that was scary after a dark period.

  • Now getting through the airports is kinda scary. Getting off the Long Island RR into Penn station is fine if I look straight ahead and focus. That’s it, and what I recommend:
When things get scary look straight ahead and focus. Be in the moment as much as times permit.  Be present. Be happy. Be resilient!
We’ve got the Now! Only once.

We had a lovely apartment with a great view of the town & sea. We went to a secluded beach yesterday, hiking down one mile to the shore..Xabi & Steve walked up to get the car and drive us up- no parking allowed on that road.
Lot’s of sun; the mediteranean was too cold to go in and good waves to my surprise..  We went on a route with beautiful vistas mountains-sea. Some of the mountain roads were extremely curvy-not well paved with no guardrails; Steve & I agree Costa Rica beats them for most treacherous. Frigliliana is a charming town and had some cute diorama-puppet art/entertainment in windows for a coin and also we said hello to a Enrique, a cute chiuhuanhua in a window whose elderly owner was so happy to hear we are American and that Obama is a world leader now to “give the world hope.”  Onto  Sayalonga, on the “Sun & Wine Route” with a yummy menu el dia at 3PM (lunch) complete with liquor de yerbes (chamomile) apertif. London next; sayonora!

The front row of upper level of double decker bus is the best seating :) .  Any seat at The Royal Albert Hall is fantastic- and the sound for Mark Knopfler & his band was super..great to hear the old faves “Sultan of Swing”, etc. and new music too. Pub lunch-supper (lupper?) by the Thames was lovely and the gardens! And many meals of ethnic food throughout the week that flew by.  Every street holds history, fashion and interesting people. The Arsenal  Stadium stands proud across the road from our flat
that we’ll be bidding goodby to tomarrow, ready to fly home to summer in Long Island.  Cheers!

Hi Eileen! Sounds like you had a great time in Europe. Wish I was there with you. xoxo Good to have you back.

  • Great to be back, and whew! re JFK drama intrigue last night when we landed…Home now- some drama-intrigue at JFK last night:
they said that they were switching gates and immigration had to be set up. we were not allowed to get out of our seats while we sat for 45 minutes and the pilots said soon, soon and soon.
then the 10 federal marshalls came on the plane in formation and went right to the back part of the plane. we were in the front. they proceeded to take out two guys, one big and mean looking that I had noticed in Heathrow, and all their stuff. they may have taken another man also or he might have been involved in the raid. they came back in five minutes and took another guy off with all his stuff. then the pilot told us we could all leave. we flew through customs and immigration.

This is one that probably wont make the news..and happens more often than any of us wants to consider..
If the flight attendants-crew knew this all along they sure put on a good show- something seemed fishy when we landed really quickly at K (with bad weather) and no time for clean up- they said to store our food trays under seats.

Steve and I were a bit “wound up” and easily made it up to midnight (5AM London time) so no jet lag this AM- that’s the small upside of this story. I was amazed at how I didnt have a panic response as many of the passengers did..not even a delayed one. Only “wound up”. I’ll take that :) .

I recently came across this on the internet- I am a firm believer in the importance of vacations.
A new survey finds that when it comes to women, the emotional rewards of a vacation are often key drivers in where they choose to spend their holiday getaways. The survey, conducted by Roper Public Affairs for Meredith Corporation, finds that women respondents value vacations that include: emotional rewards of relaxation from the daily routine; re-connection with family and friends; opportunity to re-invent and re-ignite their personal passions via adventure, freedom and escapism. For example, among women with families, 96 percent of respondents stated that vacations that “create memories” are a key component in where they choose to spend their leisure time. According to the survey, one in three female travelers, or 32 percent, have taken a multi-generational trip; one in six, or 16 percent, have taken a wedding vow renewal or anniversary trip; and, one in eight, or 12 percent, have attended an offsite family reunion. Almost half of women surveyed, or 49 percent stated that they booked their most recent vacation “by myself” with another 18 percent saying they shared the responsibility with their spouse or partner. Four out of five women respondents say that vacations are a “must have.” Nine out of 10 families with teens agreed with this statement as well. Nine out of 10 women say they want vacations that create lasting memories. Eight of 10 women use search engine web sites such a Google and Yahoo as a means of researching their vacations. Three quarters of women use travel planning websites such as Expedia or Travelocity when organizing a vacation. Similarly, seven out of 10 use airline, hotel or cruise line Web sites. Seventy-two percent say they take up to six months to make a decision when planning a vacation. Over two-thirds of respondents say they will spend the same or more on their next vacation compared to their last vacation. One in three women say they are likely to take a cruise within the next 12 months. The top reasons for taking a cruise include a fun atmosphere (48 percent); good value for the price (45 percent); sightseeing (42 percent); and excursions/activities off the ship (41 percent). Nearly one in five women took a “girls only” vacation in the past three years. The top reason for taking such a trip was “the break from the daily routine,” with 53 percent stating as such. The Meredith Travel study “Great Expectations: What Women Expect from Travel Marketers Today,” was conducted by Roper Public Affairs and Media and is based on a nationwide online survey of 1,678 female vacation travelers age 18 and over. Respondents were recruited from an online panel. Respondents were qualified for the study by having taken a vacation within the past three years that was at least 50 miles away from home, with at least one overnight stay. Before too much time has passed, I’d like to share my thoughts from the park bench en Madrid last week, 6:45PM/…
Madrid has been a stopover for us – hangin’ @ Ariel & Xabi’s…enjoying their flat and terrace… his guitar strumming…viewing a brilliant rainbow from the terrace with strain’s of Neil Young “she can take me over the rainbow” on the stereo…
We had a wonderful midday meal: grilled fish, sauteed veggies and vino…I wrote this sitting while sitting on a park bench listening to birds. I was anticipating Ariel’s superb performance in a dramatic-musical production in the eve. We weren’t dissapppointed…

I’ve gone nine days “unconnected”.. that may be my record in this phase of life. Traveling is leaving “life as you know it” behind to explore different cultures and landscapes and to refresh and renew yourself. Traveling with my husband Steve, we had wonderful five days in Mallorca with our daughters, who live in Madrid and London. The word “idyllic” kept popping up in conversation re this locale~ Later in our itinerary Steve and I revisited Marakesh, Morocco after a 37 year time span from our last visit when we spent over a month there in the winter of a year of travels. We found some positive changes which I’ll write about in a stand alone blog soon..
As a seasoned traveler to foreign lands, I’d like to share
10 Tips for Smooth Travels and Fun:
    1. Anticipate having a wonderful time
    2. If something goes “wrong” or not according to plan, try to see the humor in it and move on.
    3. Once you’re settled in and go exploring, allow yourself to “get lost”. ie: don’t have your nose glued to a map.
    4. Know key phrases in the language.
    5. Take some “downtime” everyday or a siesta to relax and recharge.
    6. Stay “unconnected” to the internet, phone, TV, newspaper for as much-as long as possible
    7. Enjoy!!!!
    8. Bring home meaningful mementos-souvenirs-photos.
    9. Compromise as much as possible with your travel mate(s)..after all, you came to have a good time and probably have tickets home together~
    10. Smile!!
