Happiness is subjective, perception rules.  Yet there are some simple keys to wellness and happiness, which go hand in hand.  The thing about happiness is that the premise often flows and changes, depending on people and circumstances in our lives.  It’s important through all the changes to be aware of your core values and be in alignment with them.

These simple truths are not always evident and hold the keys  to wellness and happiness:

  • Follow your passions; do things that bring a sense of fulfillment, joy and purpose, that validate your worth.  See your life as your own creation and strive to make it a positive one.
  • Pay close and loving attention to yourself -  tune into your needs on all levels.  Nourish, support and encourage yourself.
  • Release resentment, envy, fear, sadness, anger.  Express your feelings appropriately.
  • Visualize positive images and goals.  Whenever negative or fearful images emerge, re-focus on images that evoke feelings of peace and joy.
  • Create loving, honest relationships that allow for the expression and fulfillment of needs for intimacy and security.
  • Heal wounds from past relationships and with parents.
  • Make positive contributions to your community through work or service that you enjoy
  • Make a commitment to health and well being.  Develop a belief in the possibility of total health – physically and emotionally.

This season Less Stress for the Holidays , Managing Time & Focus to Attain Your Goals  have been well received  topics in my workshop venues. I’ve come to the personal-professional conclusion that what all participants relate to for an easier season is keeping things simple.

I’m an advocate of this philosophy year round- and I think we all go through phases and times where the “complicated version” is attractive.  Extra seasonal demands point to staying with the basics and what matters most. “Being stressed” is about feeling overwhelmed and out of control- and sometimes circumstances are beyond our control.  We always have a choice, however, about how we cope with these circumstances.

I want to thank each of you in our Long Island Networking community for the wonderful venues and events provided this year and look forward to additional opportunities to build a strong network of caring business owners and colleagues, as well as  international friends and colleagues via social media and the internet groups I belong to.

Viewing a dance performance can transport you because it is

  • multisensual; often music is involved and sometimes props-
  • erotic
  • therapeutic in that it is out of your head- into feelings and creative spaces-

I was in audience Tilles Center (CW Post) Long Island  for Jose Limon Dance Company performance this past weekend- and I was transported!

Once in a while I found myself blogging (this) in my head and forced stop- to be able to be fully present and “out of my head” with the dance viewing experience.

I’ve always found dance to be therapeutic in the doing and the viewing…

Free Danc...

I owned a dance and exercise studio and created an audio program Moving Meditation® Fitness: A Fitness and Relaxation Program  knowing that anyone can become more focused, relaxed and happier with the inclusion of dance-movement combined with visualization and guided breath work in their fitness and stress release routines.

All you need to do is simply allow  dance and movement  to transport you!

The Mayo Clinic Staff reports that researchers are claiming that, in addition to improving your spiritual health, forgiveness may have benefits for your physical health, too.  This is definitely something that warrants our attention!  It is being said that “letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for compassion, kindness and peace, and that forgiveness can lead to:

  •  Healthier relationships
  • Greater spiritual and psychological well-being
  • Less anxiety, stress and hostility
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Fewer symptoms of depression
  • Lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse”

Well, this helps explain the statement I’ve heard and read again and again that if you experience a high level of gratitude you cannot be depressed.  This makes sense since depression is anger suppressed.  Imagine a line with frustration in the middle.  It can go either way- one end is depression(extremely suppressed anger) and the other is a high anger level – often in an inappropriate, aggressive way.

What about “unforgiveness” as a health risk, then?

The University of Maryland School of Medicine  is researching the connection between anger and  ”unforgiveness”. Anger is a component of unforgiveness and anger is a health risk.  Then is unforgiveness  a health risk  as well? Included in the research are studies with aids patients.  Knowing more about the nature and course of anger expression in the context of unforgiveness will ultimately help define and clarify this area of research.

Now I’ll share a few important points that can be helpful in letting go of anger- something I’ve learned as an Advanced EFT  (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Certified Practitioner in a training I attended and has been reinforced in trainings to facilitate Anger Management.

  • As the victim, it’s OK to forgive only a small percent.
  • Perhaps the other’s behavior was impacted by a chemical/emotional imbalance
  • *** The other was doing what he/she knew how to do – perhaps learned – no matter.
  • It’s possible that the action was not meant “personally” – it was simply an “M.O.”
  • It’s impossible to change another person’s way of dealing; only your own.

If you or someone you love gets help with managing anger and/or letting it go as a victim, then stress is automatically addressed and therefore health will improve too!

Things can be chaotic enough “out there” without workplace bullying, which unfortunately  is on the upswing;  workplace bullying is a hot topic now.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia defines workplace bullying:

Workplace bullying, like childhood bullying, is the tendency of individuals or groups to use persistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a co-worker or subordinate. Workplace bullying can include such tactics as verbalnonverbalpsychologicalphysical abuse and humiliation. This type of aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical forms of school bullying, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. Bullying in the workplace is in the majority of cases reported as having been perpetrated by management and takes a wide variety of forms. Bullying can be covert or overt.

The Professional Liability Underwriting Society’s seminar “Hot Topics on D&O and Employment Practices Liability” at the University of Chicago on May 10, 2012 was led by four corporate employment law specialists.

Hot Topic #2  was Workplace Bullying.  After an honest review of what our proposed anti-bullying legislation, the Healthy Workplace Bill, does for employers and for workers and what it does not do, the employer advocates suggested that employers are wise to get ahead of this trend and address workplace bullies in a proactive manner.

Balance & Power, Inc.  has been addressing stress and anger management issues for two decades corporately, in the the educational and private sector and now is  facilitating bullying prevention trainings  and support groups for victims of bullying.  Anger in the school, the home and the workplace has reached epidemic proportions and it is my  goal to help eliminate the situation.  I believe inner strength and being centered are keys to optimal productivity and happiness.  I am a certified Anger Management Specialist, accepted by the  US courts.

Do you have enough fun and play?

I’m not talking about video games- or sex.  When you play tennis, golf, scrabble, bike, walk, ball, surf are you having fun?  Are you smiling and laughing along with laser focus or perhaps no thoughts at all?

Give yourself permission to have fun.  It’s healthy, and well, yeah, fun!

Access your inner child and see what happens!   Being happier is always an asset.

Do you know what frees you?  It’s dancing for me.  I’ve come to peace with physical modifications for myself in dancing and exercising.   Additionally, I’ve placed the concept of “dancing” into an intellectual-emotional realm of possibility: creativity for the soul. I encourage you to take time to pursue your fun passion and create new possibilities.

There is no such thing as having “life balance”  or “work-life balance” all the time.

There are, however, individual tolerations if the balance is tipped too far.

Be smart- stay in balance most of the time!  This will keep you healthy and less stressed.

Six weeks ago I found myself a victim of a reckless driver, I was in shock, hurt and my car was wrecked.  I’m getting better slowly, thanks…

The paramedics took my vitals and I made the mistake of asking what my blood pressure reading was, as it felt like my heart was popping out of my chest with each beat.  Well, it was extremely high for me- since I run low – it was 190/130.  They told me “to relax” as we were on our short ride to the hospital.  I did a lot of relaxation breathing, focusing on that extra slow-deep inhale and exhale.  When I arrived they took it again and it was down to a reasonable reading.  Whew!  I had a very long wait until a doctor saw me and did tapping-EFT to release negative energy and relax.  My reading lowered even more.

Twelve years ago as an  adjunct professor Hofstra University in Long Island, New York I conducted my own informal research with the students in my Hatha Yoga and stress management classes.  I found it to be heartwarming and amazing to see how much intention and  tried/true techniques are powerfully amazing at lowering stress levels.
