Anger is a healthy emotion when expressed appropriately. Someone recovering from an addiction finding anger and resentment difficult to deal with may find that their need for the addictive substance increases with their heightened emotions, as anger can make a person’s negative internal state intolerable and it feels horrible. The addict has one solution only- the substance.

Therefore, Anger Management is an essential component in overcoming addiction. The probability of a relapse significantly increases when emotions of anger and resentment are not dealt with properly and unresolved anger often leads to further use of drugs or alcohol as a way to cope. Addictive substances may exacerbate a person’s anger, and often this becomes a vicious destructive cycle. One key to being substance free is managing anger in appropriate ways. Effective treatment for someone being treated for substance abuse includes anger management. This is often the only way to break free of a destructive cycle of anger and substance abuse.

People who are addicted to substances typically demonstrate their anger in one of the following ways:
• They are overly aggressive, and use physical methods such as hitting, punching or kicking to get out their anger.
• They vent or express dislike with little provocation.
• They avoid the source of their anger.
• They seek revenge.
• They become so cut off from their anger that it renders them unable to cope or to release their anger. This is often because people are taught that it’s unacceptable to express anger, so they may never learn how to handle it.

Here are tips to help better manage anger during addiction recovery – or anytime – therefore lessening the chances of substance abuse relapse:
• Walk away from a potentially volatile situation and take time to calm down and assess the situation.
• Learn relaxation techniques through such activities as yoga and in Anger Management sessions.
• Learn how to communicate anger in a productive way.
• Refrain from thinking in black and white terms and learn to realize when anger is irrational.
• Make good life choices and get away from toxic environments (at home or at work) that create feelings of anger.

Anger creates physiological changes and fuels a chemical release in the body that drugs and alcohol can mask. When people are able to recognize this, they can wait until they feel calmer to think more clearly and make good decisions instead of responding immediately with anger. Overall, people are receptive to anger management groups and individual sessions. It’s a good idea to wait to be clean from substances to determine what behavior is from substance abuse versus an underlying chemical imbalance or perhaps simply a lack of learned coping skills. And it’s never to late to begin!

Viewing a dance performance can transport you because it is

  • multisensual; often music is involved and sometimes props-
  • erotic
  • therapeutic in that it is out of your head- into feelings and creative spaces-

I was in audience Tilles Center (CW Post) Long Island  for Jose Limon Dance Company performance this past weekend- and I was transported!

Once in a while I found myself blogging (this) in my head and forced stop- to be able to be fully present and “out of my head” with the dance viewing experience.

I’ve always found dance to be therapeutic in the doing and the viewing…

Free Danc...

I owned a dance and exercise studio and created an audio program Moving Meditation® Fitness: A Fitness and Relaxation Program  knowing that anyone can become more focused, relaxed and happier with the inclusion of dance-movement combined with visualization and guided breath work in their fitness and stress release routines.

All you need to do is simply allow  dance and movement  to transport you!

Six weeks ago I found myself a victim of a reckless driver, I was in shock, hurt and my car was wrecked.  I’m getting better slowly, thanks…

The paramedics took my vitals and I made the mistake of asking what my blood pressure reading was, as it felt like my heart was popping out of my chest with each beat.  Well, it was extremely high for me- since I run low – it was 190/130.  They told me “to relax” as we were on our short ride to the hospital.  I did a lot of relaxation breathing, focusing on that extra slow-deep inhale and exhale.  When I arrived they took it again and it was down to a reasonable reading.  Whew!  I had a very long wait until a doctor saw me and did tapping-EFT to release negative energy and relax.  My reading lowered even more.

Twelve years ago as an  adjunct professor Hofstra University in Long Island, New York I conducted my own informal research with the students in my Hatha Yoga and stress management classes.  I found it to be heartwarming and amazing to see how much intention and  tried/true techniques are powerfully amazing at lowering stress levels.

If you are hassled, impatient or frustrated this blog is for you :) . I’ve asked around; everyone knows the definition of hassled and mellow. However, not many are able to transition from hassled to mellow in a short time and without doing damage- emotionally and/or physically.  An example of a smaller issue someone can stress over is finding kitchen cabinets open all the time.  Well, you may say- that’s nothing- just close them..OK, but when that small stressor accumulates emotionally, stuff can happen- both in your body and confrontationally with the “culprit”.  Here’s a bigger example that we all can relate to- stuck in traffic-late to begin with-and worst case- cell is not in the car with you (perhaps on kitchen table or in another bag?).  And how about not saving something on the computer and its suddenly disappears after spending almost an hour writing. Sometimes the impatience-frustration-anger is directed inward and sometimes at others.  No matter to our adrenalin, cortisol and muscle tension levels, which are now way up and needing to be released.  Easier said than done..

Here are 5 easy way to transition from hassled to mellow- just give yourself and others a chance!:

  • Relaxation Breathing at least 3 times with exra release: Breathe deeply in through your nose and out mouth, strong and longer exhale than inhale.
  • Leave when possible and try stronger physical releases: **silent scream, progressive muscle relaxation**, walk, exercise.
  • Do something fun- or at least differently with a smile/forced positive outlook.
  • Listen to music of the genre you want to feel like.
  • Communicate when others as necessary from the “I” place without blame or judgement.
  • Learn EFTand use it on the spot when possible and frequently there after until the issue no longer upsets you.

If you need immediate help here are some stress tips you can implement today:

  • Take Cleansing Breaths: Three sets of deep inhalations through the nose (belly rising)
and exhaling through the nose, (abdomen deflating) can (temporarily) change
    your physiology.
  • Stretch: Practice Office Yoga and the Moving Meditation® Fitness Program
throughout the day to release/reduce tension and increase energy.
  • Walk: A five minute walk outside can change your mood and mindset.  Try adding  breathwork + affirmations: even better!
  • Listen to Music: A mood changer.
  • Eat Peacefully: This aids the digestion and gives you “time away”. Leave your office!
  • Allow Time: Give yourself extra time for the unexpected.
  • Smile and Laugh: Humor has been proven effective in reducing stress.

You may contact me for a complimentary 15 minute telephone consult. I coach individuals and groups via phone, skype and face to face in the NY area.
