 To all my friends recently touched by destruction and dire circumstances, as our collective prayers, thoughts and actions aid recovery from Superstorm Sandy, and to all of my friends not  in the New York Metro area, let’s remember we can always accelerate resilience in spirit with these simple steps:

• Set specific goals that are attainable.  Take baby steps to get there when necessary.
• When you are feeling down due to personal circumstances, take stock of your strengths and positive circumstances and BE GRATEFUL!!
• Surround yourself with positive people as much as possible.
• Do not read, watch or listen to the news if you become “too upset”.

You are the only one who can control your attitude. By focusing on what is strong and enduring and seeing potential, you can take calculated risks and overcome challenges .

 

It takes an open, creative mind free from anxiety to pick up on opportunities.

 

They are out there ready to be accessed by your positive and resilient radar!!

that I will be co-facilitating with 16 year old Jamie Isaacs, Founder of The Jamie Isaacs Foundation for Anti-Bullying Inc. and Anne Isaacs, President of The Jamie Isaacs Foundation.

 

Support groups beginning the end of June through July and August. Support groups will meet 1x per week for 2 hours.  Location TBA

Hi!!

The Holidays have begun for Americans: Ads for Black Friday.  Sales at midnight.

Turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing and pie, yum!!  We are grateful and most of us are happy to be at this table.  I’d like to say a bit more about grateful..

There is a huge correlation between gratefulness-forgiveness-happiness.  Research has documented it and everyday I affirm this for myself and with clients.  I recommend  every evening going over a few things-people-circumstances that you are grateful for; perhaps journaling them.  Here are some of mine:

I am grateful for my supportive and loving family.

I am grateful for my home and surroundings.

I am grateful that I can thrive amidst world chaos.

I am grateful for my health and positive attitude.

I am grateful for my friends.

I am grateful for knowing all of you- my friend and colleagues.

Whether you are hosting a family dinner or traveling to one, you may find yourself experiencing some feelings of anxiety or apprehension in preparation for the holiday gathering. Now, check in with your stress level about the holidays and I bet it’s much lower. Repeat this everyday.  You may substitute words as needed. Visualize positive celebrations, take time for yourself and keep up the gratefulness lists.

 Myth #1:

Anger is inheritedResearch has indicated that people are not born with set, specific ways of expressing anger.  These studies show that because the expression of anger is learned behavior, more appropriate ways of expressing anger can be learned.

Myth #2:  Anger Automatically Leads to Aggression
It is a misconception that athe only way to express anger is through aggression.  Effective anger management involves controlling the escalation of anger by learning assertiveness skills, changing negative and hostile “self-talk”, challenging irrational beliefs and implementing a variety of behavioral strategies.Myth #3: People Must Be Aggressive to Get What They Want

Many people confuse assertiveness with aggression.  The goal of aggression is to dominate, intimidate, harm or injure another person- to win at any cost.  Conversely, the goal of assertiveness is to express feelings of anger in a way that is respectful of other people.Myth #4  Venting Anger Is Always Desirable

Anger is learned and can easily become a routine, predictable response, an inappropriate pattern, to a variety of situations,  resulting in negative consequences.  Venting anger in an aggressive way reinforces aggressive behavior.To break the anger habit, an awareness must be developed of the events, circumstances and behaviors that “trigger” your anger.  In addition to becoming aware of anger, you need to learn and develop strategies to manage it.

Are you SOARing! into summer?

Here in Long Island, NY everyone is participating in beach, boating, biking, bar-b-ques outdoor concerts and other  fun.  I hope that you can take a few days to relax, renew and recharge!  I’m also in especially high spirits because all month we’ve had out of town company here- daughter Jess from London has come and gone and Ariel is here now from Madrid with her Spanish boyfriend.  It makes me happy that they have made wonderful lives for themselves and that we are closer than ever..and that we still have the house that they grew up in to enjpy each other’s energy!

  • Take Cleansing Breaths: Three sets of deep inhalations through the nose (belly rising)
    and exhaling through the nose, (abdomen deflating) can (temporarily) change
    your physiology.
  • Stretch: Practice Office Yoga and the Moving Meditation® Fitness Program 
    throughout the day to release/reduce tension and increase energy.
  • Walk: A five minute walk outside can change your mood and mindset.  Try adding  breathwork + affirmations: even better!
  • Listen to Music: A mood changer.
  • Eat Peacefully: This aids the digestion and gives you “time away”. Leave your office!
  • Allow Time: Give yourself extra time for the unexpected.
