You always have a choice even though you may not realize it in the moment. Circumstances may be beyond your control; your attitude is your choice.
Going to the places that scare you, being fearless and choosing to be resilient, that’s what this blog is about.

I became fearless going on the “scary” rides in Coney Island, Brooklyn as a child even though I never would go on the parachute- there were known accidents on that one and I was very safety conscious- Mom was a worrier.
Going in the front car of the roller coaster, approaching the top (with friends of course ) and looking at the big drop ahead gave no time to do anything except scream & hold on tight! So it went through the fun summer months. Thinking back over the years, I did many courageous things and not much scared me. Here are a few that got me thinking back to the scary rides…:
Walking on hot coals while on a mind body spirit retreat in Santa Fe ( first time away from my young children too). We had lots of prep time and when it was my turn I was ready. Awesome.

Skiing. This wasn’t worth it for me; injured and it could’ve been worse… Later on I took up cross country- fun!

Para sailing Puerto Vallarta: This was the ultimate overcome of fear of heights for me. I was sitting on the beach for several days meditating (and drinking pina coladas) and surprised myself with the conscious decision into action. Very challenging and I did look down a few times when I wasn’t looking at the mountain.

Forty years ago: Steve & I rode our bikes out of Florence (where we bought the racers- and mine was a boy’s with the bar- the only kind made at the time) and I scared myself with a coughing attack that precipitated me throwing the pack(s) of Marlboros out- which was scary ‘cause I couldn’t imagine not smoking “cold turkey” which I succeeded at. And it was difficult- maybe not scary- to totally change our travel plans so that we went back to the city and got the bikes on trains that rode out of the seven hills, through the Alps and landed us in Germany to enjoy the rolling hills (so we could use all the gears ) and along the Rhine onto Holland. Of course we stopped to eat and sleep in foreign lands- sometimes in hostels and sometimes in the forest, scary and amazing.
I’m happy to be telling you all now. When friends and strangers comment on (both) our daughters living in Europe – I smile and am happy we brought them up with roots and wings – and the ability to navigate the scary and unknown.
• The scariest thing of all for me was 9/11 and the period following that. Were we really OK? Then it became more than me and being empty nested- yes our daughters already just in Europe- and it was much more than getting off the coach and back onto the treadmill and back into the gym- even that was scary after a dark period.
• Now getting through the airports is kinda scary. Getting off the Long Island RR into Penn station is fine if I look straight ahead and focus. That’s it, and what I recommend:
When things get scary look straight ahead and focus. Be in the moment as much as times permit. Be Present. Be Happy.
Be Resilient!
We’ve got the Now! Only once.

To all my friends recently touched by destruction and dire circumstances, as our collective prayers, thoughts and actions aid recovery from Superstorm Sandy, and to all of my friends not  in the New York Metro area, let’s remember we can always accelerate resilience in spirit with these simple steps:

• Set specific goals that are attainable.  Take baby steps to get there when necessary.
• When you are feeling down due to personal circumstances, take stock of your strengths and positive circumstances and BE GRATEFUL!!
• Surround yourself with positive people as much as possible.
• Do not read, watch or listen to the news if you become “too upset”.

You are the only one who can control your attitude. By focusing on what is strong and enduring and seeing potential, you can take calculated risks and overcome challenges .

It takes an open, creative mind free from anxiety to pick up on opportunities.

They are out there ready to be accessed by your positive and resilient radar!!

What makes you happy?

When you discover that equation then I know you will get lots of compliments re: you’re looking great! and I hope you can say “thanks!” – like I’ve been doing since I’ve been in the semi-public eye for 3 days since my return from fun-family vacationing and adventures in Europe.Free HAPP...

What’s different?  I’ve been noticing all day today here in Long Island, NY   that my work load is lighter (since I’ve given myself time to catch up) and that I’m not in a hurry to complete  something or get somewhere.  I’ve had extreme patience (for me) at MD’s office’s and bank business.  That’s really different…

I’ve not attended any evening events (due to jetlag).  Jetlag is gone now (due to acupuncture @Maria Antonopoulos http://www.linkedin.com/pub/maria-antonopoulos/6/33/353)

and I’ve really been able to catch up.  Many lessons here…

Sometimes as entrepreneurs/small biz owners we must be on overload, even when we do not realize it.  This week has shown me, once again, how important it is to take an extended time off.

Just do it- it’s good for you- and you’ll look great!

Do you have enough fun and play?

I’m not talking about video games- or sex.  When you play tennis, golf, scrabble, bike, walk, ball, surf are you having fun?  Are you smiling and laughing along with laser focus or perhaps no thoughts at all?

Give yourself permission to have fun.  It’s healthy, and well, yeah, fun!

Access your inner child and see what happens!   Being happier is always an asset.

Do you know what frees you?  It’s dancing for me.  I’ve come to peace with physical modifications for myself in dancing and exercising.   Additionally, I’ve placed the concept of “dancing” into an intellectual-emotional realm of possibility: creativity for the soul. I encourage you to take time to pursue your fun passion and create new possibilities.

There is no such thing as having “life balance”  or “work-life balance” all the time.

There are, however, individual tolerations if the balance is tipped too far.

Be smart- stay in balance most of the time!  This will keep you healthy and less stressed.

This morning I was blessed with the time, energy and location to be walking on the boardwalk in Long beach, Long Island, New York.  I was thinking back to my roots in Brooklyn, spending time on the beach in Brighton and affirming my powerful connections to mind-body-spirit when I’m in this environment.  More about Brooklyn: Lincoln HS., the F and D subways, Coney Island rides :) -

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.”  - Brian Tracy

Gratitude has been getting a lot of press in self-help/development curriculums because it is essential to acknowledge personal gratefuluness in several categories to help up your forgivess quotient and helps transition you into the happiness realm! Try this: Sit back, close your eyes and visualize everything you are grateful for including several of these categories:

  • personal attributes and abilities
  • people in your life
  • material things in your life
  • a lifestyle
  • environment

Let it free flow and then write them down in columns.  Review this whenever you are feeling down, first thing in the morning and before bed.

Gratitude, Forgiveness, Happiness and Stress, Anger, Depression

Forgiveness of one’s self for wrong doings and poor attitudes is necessary before you can forgive others, as loving oneself must happen before you are able to love others.    Forgiveness of heinous crimes is not possible for most people and not necessary. You do not need to let go of 100% anger/guilt to let go and move on.  Try forgiving a percentage, and “work on it” through EFT,  guided imagery and de-sensitization techniques, hypnosis, life coaching, therapy to get the percentage higher.  It can be helpful in acknowledging that those in question may have been doing the best they knew how or were capable of (due to personal history, mental capacity, mental illness).

Depression is almost always  supressed, repressed, not communicated (or communicated partially) anger, with or without genetic tendencies.

Anger expressed at over-the-top levels results in socially unacceptable aggressive behavior that steps over physical and/or emotional  boundaries (hitting-pushing-punching-pulling, property damage including throwing things, slamming doors and name calling, cursing-yelling. Health related symptoms of high anger and stress levels include high blood pressure, headaches, racing pulse, difficulty breathing, tight muscles.

Stress levels elevate when feeling out of control or “overwhelmed” and may cause someone to exhibit angrily acting out or be irritable.  The flip side is a depressive episode.

It is important to remember that human beings are not perfect and we all “mess-up” at times.  If you or someone you are close to  experience any of the above on an ongoing basis or regularly, it is time to get help!  Often learning simple coping strategies and techniques as well as how to  communicate effectively is all you need to do- in conjunction with a practitioner you feel comfortable with and can create a trusting relationship with.

I am a certified Anger Management Specialist, EFT Practitioner, Peak Performance Success Coach and (former) biofeedback  practitioner (this training includes relaxation techniques, de-sensitization techniques, guided imagery and self-trance).  I work with individuals and groups  via telephone, skype and face to face in Wantagh, Long Island  and go on site for corporate and organizational trainings.  Currently, a hot topic (unfortunately) is Workplace Bullying.

Yes and yes! Absolutely, especially if you’ve opened this, which means you’re motivated.  However, more than motivation is necessary to be successful.  Commitment is needed.. Groups are forming now in Baldwin, Long Island that will address these issues and more.  I’m also facilitating several local venues this week http://www.balanceandpower.com/events.php. I coach individuals on the phone or face to face in Baldwin.  If you’re looking for teleseminars stay tuned!

Here are some tried and true strategies to be more focused and fearless:

  • Take time to review priorities daily, keeping “the big picture” in mind.

  • Take time to exercise several times a week.
  • Take time to meditate and/or practice moving meditation such as yoga.
  • Take time to discuss and brainstorm ideas; perhaps journal.
  • Take time to get enough sleep and to eat properly.
  • Learn and practice EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, tapping)

Inner strength and being centered are keys to life and business success
