How to Effectively Manage Time & Prioritize

“Are you challenged by time?

Is your time cup 1/2 empty or 1/2 full?

With this lesson you can Claim your power in the midst of chaos and movement…carry your stillness with you and you will have enough time to make the important things happen. It may be because you’re doing all the C’s (low priorities on your list), not because you haven’t time, that you don’t get to do the A’s.

Time can be elusive…don’t let it slip through your fingers. Remember, as The Rolling Stones said, Time is on your side.

“Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets.” - Alan Lakein

“If moment by moment you can keep your mind clear, then nothing will confuse you.” - ShengYen

Managing time effectively overlaps with a few other topics, including prioritizing, goal setting and “life balance”, meditation and the assertiveness trait of saying “no” effectively.

Viewing a dance performance can transport you because it is

  • multisensual; often music is involved and sometimes props-
  • erotic
  • therapeutic in that it is out of your head- into feelings and creative spaces-

I was in audience Tilles Center (CW Post) Long Island  for Jose Limon Dance Company performance this past weekend- and I was transported!

Once in a while I found myself blogging (this) in my head and forced stop- to be able to be fully present and “out of my head” with the dance viewing experience.

I’ve always found dance to be therapeutic in the doing and the viewing…

Free Danc...

I owned a dance and exercise studio and created an audio program Moving Meditation® Fitness: A Fitness and Relaxation Program  knowing that anyone can become more focused, relaxed and happier with the inclusion of dance-movement combined with visualization and guided breath work in their fitness and stress release routines.

All you need to do is simply allow  dance and movement  to transport you!

Vacations are wonderful. No matter when or where- I am a big fan of time away with faith that it is the right time-place-people that you have arranged it with.  It is extra wonderful when you make a pact of no phones- and no or occassional computer.  Really!  Some adjustments  and maybe some extra down time- but hey isn’t that what you sign up for when its a vacation?  I’m just back from Europe, jetlagged and refreshed at the same time.  Ready to connect and reconnect.  Be here in the right time-place: now. I even handled my emergency “root canal” OK and made clear choices.Throughout your day, it’s important to take “mini-vacations”.  Take breaks throughout the work day to become centered and release stress/frustration.  Did you know that when you have no stress you are 100% more productive.  Of course, some stress is OK- and their is “good stress” too- like getting married, going on a vacation..Your body doesn’t know the difference, and the adrenalin and cortisol kick in. A long flight is a great place to practice relaxation techniques.  Afraid of flying? I have facilitated amazing turn-arounds with EFT and de-sensitiving techniques that include visualization.
Stress is cumulative; dispersing it can shift productivity and up creativity and confidence.  If you need help with this, you may contact me for a complimentary peak performance coaching consult. www.balanceandpower.com/stressmanagement.php.  My one:one and group coaching sessions are conducted via phone, skype, and in Wantagh or RVC Long Island.   I am also available to facilitate trainings in stress, anger management (I’m a certified AM specialist) and related issues via webinar and at your site.

“Highly creative people tend to display ample social adjustment, empathy, sensitivity, rationality, and open-mindedness. Further, and more directly pertinent to consumer behavior, highly creative people have been found to be excellent problem solvers. In fact, expertise at problem solving, both of a specific and generalized nature, is one of the central operational measures of creativity.” Journal of Consumer Research, Vol. 7, No. 3, p. 286

I love this. I agree with every point- do you??

To all the wonderful people on the journey with me,
A psychic healer via telephone told me, “never stop dancing”. I’d not spoken with her before, she didn’t know that about 20 years ago I shut down along with my dance/exercise studio when my foot was run over by a van. Yes, I was jaywalking and the van was making an illegal move. Yes, I was stopped in my tracks, right foot forward. Yes, I was grateful that’s all that happened. Yes I suffered PTSD. So I agreed with the psychic and asked her to tell me her reason. “Because it frees you”, she said. Recently contemplating this conversation that I had about a year ago, at the time undergoing numerous physical ailments due to age and over-use, I’ve come to peace with physical modifications for myself in dancing and exercising. Additionally, I’ve placed the concept of “dancing” into an intellectual-emotional realm of possibility: creativity for the soul. Do you know what frees you? We can know something (or someone) for a lifetime(s), and be taking it/him/her for granted. Being thankful and grateful never goes out of style. In this time of economic, environmental, health and world peace challenges, it’s more important than ever to take time each day to be grateful, to pursue personal passion(s) and create new possibilities. Allow yourself to access the positive energies within you and be resilient!

“At the moment you consciously make a choice, pay attention to how you feel.”

From The Law of Karma

We all find ourselves at times walking the edge between this and that, yes and no. . When you make a decision and you have a sense of “relief” you know it’s a right choice. Intuitive “hits” come in many forms- from sensory images, physical feelings and auditory and olfactory clues. When you are open to receiving and noticing “signs”, it becomes progressively easier to trust your intuition. The optimal receptive “state” has being “grounded” for a prerequisite. For instant grounding, connect with nature: take a walk, meditate at the ocean, listen to the birds, gaze at a flower. Spring is the perfect season to jumpstart your intuition. Or listen to a guided meditation, which you may listen to on the Moving Meditation(R) Fitness audio program.  The following tips help access your intuition are most effective when practiced on a daily basis:

• Be Quiet: Take time out every day to experience some form of stillness and silence. Calm your mind chatter with deep breathing or meditation. Releasing your need to know, analyze and think will allow intuition to work.
• Trust and Look for Signs: Be open to seeing signs and symbols and receiving information from all around you, including songs from the radio and street signs.
• Be Creative, Play!: Creativity and play partner well with intuition, as does getting into the “zone” with cardio exercise. Whenever you “lose track of the time and move into a “flow state” intuitive guidance may be at work.
• Take Risks and notice your intuitive hits happen!
• Be Inquisitive:When you ask yourself questions, you open to clarity and insight. The answers lie within us- get out of your own way so that the answers can surface and trust yourself.
• Write: Writing allows information and insight to come forth from your inner self. Take time to journal-or blog everyday. Connect moments of gratitude, synchronistic events and affirmations through writing.

Power Quote

Success

“Perfectionism is a refusal to let yourself move ahead. It is a loop – an obsessive, debilitating closed system that causes you to get stuck in the details of what you are writing or painting or making and to lose sight of the whole.”

- Julia Cameron

Perfectionism is the enemy of creativity, productivity, and, at times, sanity. You don’t even have to be creating anything to be crippled by perfectionism. It can also frustrate your efforts as a mom, a wife, a friend, and a human being. No one and no thing is perfect.
PS. When this appeared in my power quotes blogthought newsletter blast there was a funny typo, which I’ve corrected on this blog. (as in not perfect).

According to a US News and World Report poll, sixty percent of Americans said that President Obama’s inauguration made them feel “more hopeful about the next four years.” Even though the economy’s growth charts are hitting bottom, various news outlets are reporting a surge in spirit.

So, what’s going on? Is optimism an unwise strategy leaving us unprepared? Is it really safe to be an optimist through doom and gloom? Optimism is about working creatively with potential, not being limited by the challenges. It’s about the glass half full and not deluding ourselves that the glass is filled with champagne. The key to optimism is tuning in to how we interpret the events playing out in our own lives. Are we looking for the opportunities and making predictions that we can realize with our own actions? The choice is ours. It’s about thinking accurately, making calculated risks and when things go wrong, seeing the setbacks as temporary. It’s about being innovative, flexible and resilient and being able to move forward from a fall. Optimism is the mindset that encourages sound and practical ingenuity and shines a light: for yourself and others.

Twelve Tips to Safely “Go Optimistic”:

• Optimism is not about sugar coating the truth. Lying gets you into trouble- even with yourself!
• Think of possibilities from different perspectives.
• Stop talking in absolutes. Eliminates the words nothing and never from self talk.
• Set specific goals that are attainable.
• When you are feeling down due to personal circumstances, take stock of your strengths.
• Lower the stakes, not the standards: Don’t have your whole life riding on the outcome of one event
• Savor small triumphs, steps leading to the bigger picture.
• Set aside self blame and learn from your mistakes.
• Surround yourself with positive people
• Do not read, watch or listen to the news if you become “too upset”.
• Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your feelings.
• Cultivate generosity and gratitude.

We are the only ones who can control our attitude. By focusing on what is strong and enduring and seeing our potential, we can take calculated risks and overcome challenges.
