Anger can easily become a go-to emotion; to remedy, start noticing when and why you get angry.
The first thing you might want to try in lessening episodes of anger and to identify and  harness your anger  is to notice when you get angry, to identify your triggers and when/how your buttons get pushed.  You might begin to see a pattern of some kind. For example, you could notice that it is always your first response or that it comes up a lot in one particular situation. If the pattern doesn’t become clear right away, you could try keeping a journal about when you get angry and see if you can find any underlying meaning. The good thing about keeping a journal is that you can explore your anger more deeply in it—from examining who in your family of origin expressed a lot of anger to how you feel when you encounter anger in others.

Anger can be a powerful ally, since it is filled with energy that we can harness and use to create change in the world. It is one of the most cathartic emotions, and it can also be a very effective cleanser of the emotional system. However, when it becomes a habit, it actually loses its power to transform and becomes an obstacle to growth. Identifying the role anger plays in your life and harnessing it  to restore it to its proper function can bring new energy and expansiveness to your emotional life.

If you need help with this, you may contact me for a complimentary consult.  I am a certified anger management specialist and have groups in Long Island and work with individuals face to face and via telephone and skype.

Jamie Herzlich writes the Small Business column in Newsday.

“Manage stress to help your business thrive”

The article on stress busting tips for small business owners is in today’s Newsday. Here is the link:

Manage stress to help your business thrive

April 19, 2011 by JAMIE HERZLICH / jherzlich@aol.com

You’re running your business day after day, week after week.

All the important decisions fall on your shoulders and there never seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done.

It’s no wonder you might be feeling a bit stressed. The challenge is learning how to deal with it so it doesn’t impact your health or take over your life, say experts.

“Stress typically leads to burnout, sickness, unhappiness and reduced productivity,” says work-life/career coach Sharon Teitelbaum of Sharonteitelbaum.com and author of “Getting Unstuck Without Coming Unglued” (Wonder Works Publishing; $15). “You need to manage your stress levels in order to thrive.”

There are several ways to do this and here are just a few:

Cut a deal with your inner perfectionist: Entrepreneurs feel like they have to do everything fabulously, says Teitelbaum of Watertown, Mass. Oftentimes they become a slave to their high standards in every part of their lives, she says. “Find a place in your life where you can lower a standard without serious consequences,” she says. Perhaps, it means outsourcing less-critical tasks.

Acknowledge yourself: Business owners/managers can be their own worst critics, says Teitelbaum. Acknowledge your own good work so you’re not always focusing on the negative. It doesn’t have to be momentous achievements, even something like handling a difficult conversation with a customer, she notes.

Take time off:Designate clear time off and stick to it. Turn off your BlackBerry and adhere to some downtime. “You can return to work refreshed,” says Teitelbaum.

Reduce distractions:If you keep getting sidetracked or distracted, you’ll feel like you’re accomplishing nothing and get more stressed, explains Eileen Lichtenstein, chief executive of Balance & Power Inc. in Baldwin, a work-life peak performance success coach. Force yourself to not check email every two seconds or, if working from home, don’t start doing chores, she says.

Optimize peak performance times: Understand when your personal energy is at its peak, says Lichtenstein, author of “SOAR! with Resilience” (Balance & Power Press; $19.99). Plan your work accordingly, she says. For instance, if you’re working on Excel spreadsheets, you might not save that for the evening when your eyes have been straining all day.

Change scenery:Take a quick walk outside or set up your computer in a shady spot outdoors, says Lichtenstein. “It’s extremely peaceful,” she says.

Delegate: You don’t need to do everything yourself, says Rosalie Moscoe, owner of Health

inHarmony.com in Toronto and author of “Frazzled, Hurried Woman! Your Stress Relief Guide to Thriving . . . Not Merely Surviving” (Create Space; $18.95). Focus on tasks you can really add value to and delegate some of the other more mundane tasks, says Moscoe, who did this herself after spending too much time designing booklet covers for her speaking engagements. “You’ve got to get people to help you,” says Moscoe, who now has a student do that task for her so she can work on more pressing activities.

Eat right:Don’t skip meals or eat junk food, but instead choose high-energy foods with protein like eggs and fish, says Moscoe. “That’s brain food,” she says.

Get physical:Do something physical and get your body moving, says Moscoe. It will get your blood flowing and you’ll feel energized, she says. That’s what Katherine Heaviside, president of Epoch 5 Public Relations in Huntington, does each morning before her work day begins. “I run five to six days a week,” says Heaviside. “I find when I run, by the end of it, I’m thinking more clearly.” She even leaves her cellphone behind. “There’s a sense of aloneness I really treasure,” notes Heaviside.

Fast Fact:

Entrepreneurs certainly do lead busy lives. A survey last year by U.S. Bancorp of more than 2,700 small business owners found that 65 percent say they are almost always on the go.

We have heard about LOA (Law of Attraction) & visualizing positive outcomes to manifest who and what we want. Most importantly, we need the action/practice component for ultimate productivity powerful positive language to become a happy habit! I’ve been revisiting this aspect of positive thinking and LOA, and am encouraging you to take this challenge and change your low energy phrases to high-energy phrases with your own words.

Here are some examples:

  • “That’s not bad” becomes “That’s quite good.”
  • “No problem” becomes “You’re very welcome, sure, I’ll be happy to!”
  • “That’s bad” becomes “That’s not good.”
  • “Don’t worry” becomes “You’ll be fine.”
  • “Put some effort into it” becomes “Let’s put some energy into it.”
  • “It’s too hard” becomes “It’s not easy.”
  • “I’m sick” becomes “I don’t feel well.”
  • “I forgot” becomes “I didn’t remember.”
  • “I’ve been working hard” becomes “I’ve been working well.”
  • “Don’t cry” becomes “That’s OK..”

This switch is most easily facilitated with a buddy- someone whom you’re often with and agrees to do this for a while with a smile! Do you have some additional phrases to switch-up? Please share them with your buddy this week.

Negative language conveys a poor image to those around us.

Sometimes it causes conflict and confrontation where none is necessary or desired. The first place to start using positive language is with written material. Once you have developed the knack of writing positively, it will be easier to change your spoken language to present a more positive tone.

Your subconscious picks up on the negative word, no matter what context you use.

Negative phrasing and language often have the following characteristics:

  • tells the recipient what cannot be done.
  • has a subtle tone of blame.
  • includes words like can’t, won’t, unable to, that tell the recipient what the sending agency cannot do
  • does not stress positive actions that would be appropriate, or positive consequences.

Positive phrasing and language have the following qualities:

  • tells the recipient what can be done
  • suggests alternatives and choices available to the recipient
  • sounds helpful and encouraging rather than bureaucratic
  • stresses positive actions and positive consequences that can be anticipated.

Common Negative Language/Phrasing

If you want to move to more positive communication, the first task is to identify and eliminate common negative phrasing. The following are quite common, and should be avoided whenever possible.

1. Expressions that suggest carelessness:
a) You neglected to specify…
b) You failed to include…
c) You overlooked enclosing…

2. Phrases that suggest the person is lying:
a) You claim that…
b) You say that…
c) You state that…

3. Expressions that imply that the recipient is not too bright:
a) We cannot see how you…
b) We fail to understand…
c) We are at a loss to know…

4. Demanding phrases that imply coercion/pressure:
a) You should…
b) You ought to…
c) You must…
d) We must ask you to…
e) We must insist…

5. Phrases that might be interpreted as sarcastic or patronizing:
a) No doubt…
b) We will thank you to…
c) You understand, of course…
d) Please respond soon…

 Practice!!

It works  to have someone you are around with often so that you can give each other a “signal” when a negative phrase or word is used.  All the best with this!! As with every new habit – it takes at least 21 days of “getting it right”.

Anger provoking events are all around us; like stress it is in the perception of each individual as to how one responds.  When you get angry, it is beacause an event has provoked your anger.  Everyday events such as these are anger provoking in the moment or because it has reminded you of a similar situation in the past that was anger provoking:

  • Being cut off on the road
  • Traffic congestion
  • Long waiting in a doctor’s office
  • Long lines in the store, post office, bank to wait on
  • Crowded buses and trains
  • Being wrongly accused
  • A friend joking about a sensitive topic
  • Having an untidy roomate or family member
  • Having to clean up someone else’s mess
  • Being placed on hold for long periods of time while on the telephone
  • Having difficulty understanding someone on the telephone in customer service
  • Being given wrong directions
  • Having anything stolen from you
  • Rumors spread about you
  • Having a neighbor who plays the stereo too loud, etc.

It is also possible for specific events to touch on sensitive areas in your life.  These “red flags” usually refer to long standing issues that can easily lead to anger.  For example,  even though you may be a good reader as an adult, a childhood slowness sensitivity may be evoked when someone rushes us or becomes impatient re completing an application or form, or when someone calls us “slow” or “stupid”.

As an anger coach and being US Court certified as an Anger Management Specialist I help individuals and groups to learn how to deal with anger provoking events and triggers.  You may contact me to find out how we can work together via telephone, skpe or face to face in Long Island, NY.

An article published in today’s Sunday April 9 Newsday written by Rabbi Marc Gellman of the “God Squad” titled “Finding your purpose on life’s solitary journey” included a few powerful inspirational quotes that I will share with you here:

“Lonliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.”
- Mother Teresa

“Many persons have the wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness.  It is not attained through self-gratification but thtough fidelity to a worthy purpose.”   – Helen Keller

“You never find happiness until you stop looking for it.”  - Chuanf Tzu, the 5th century BCE Chinese Philosopher

“Happiness is having having a large, loving, close knot family- in another city.”   - George Burns

“For there is hope of a tree.  If it be cut down, that it wqill sprout again, and its tender branches will not die.  If it’s roots are old in the earth, even if the trunk dies in the ground, at the first scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a plant.”    - Job (14:7-9)

“God is the healer of shattered hearts.”  -Rabbinic teaching
