There is a wonderful poem, author unknown that I read to a group of inner city college bound High School Seniors that I am facilitating a “Prep for Success” CUNY program for based on my  SOAR! with Resilience™ Book- and you could’ve heard a pin drop..(not the usual :) ).  I will include it  in the next edition, for sure:

When things go wrong a they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit…
Rest if you must-but don’t quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he thought he might’ve stuck it out.
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things go wrong
That you musn’t quit.

A new Australian study that found almost one in six cases of depression among working people caused by job stress, that nearly one in five (17 percent) working women suffering from depression attribute their condition to job stress and more than one in eight (13 percent) working men do the same. In the last decade, the number of American workers that say job stress is a major problem in their lives has doubled. In fact, the US Department of Health reported that 70 percent of physical and mental complaints at work are related to stress.

So what are we to do? Stock up on Kleenex?.. I do not recommend that you quit your position before you consider the issues of paying  bills and isolation.  There are many techniques that you can do/adapt to the workplace to instantly-temporarily relieve stress; when done on a regular basis together with coaching transform stress into happiness and productivity:

  • As you walk around inhale 4 counts exhale 4 counts, belly expanding as you inhale before the chest and deflate last.
  • Listen to music whenever you can.
  • Keep light (or heavy:)) weights in the office to get your sets in.
  • Do EFT (tapping) on your issues whenever you can- (the restroom stall is always a good place). Find out more about EFT here: http://www.balanceandpower.com/eft.php .
  • Go outside and connect with nature as often as possible.
  • “Silent Scream” as needed- ask me about that..
  • Contact me for a 30 minute telephone consult to see how you can benefit from my coaching-healing modalities: eileen@balanceandpowewr.com  516 623 4353

My worst allergy week has passed or else I’ve gotten it under control with meds and supplements..who knows? who cares?  I feel good and can move through everything.  This evening’s Chinese take-out fortune says “writing is thinking on paper.”  True for me, and all who blog and journal.  I’m grateful to blogging- it gives me more “accountability” than jounaling~ and when I didn’t journal as much as I know I needed to- now there’s a double goal- professional inspiration + personal release.  Another “thing” to be grateful for :)

Finding work-life balance in today’s frenetically paced world is no simple task.  Spend more time at work than at home, and you miss out on a rewarding personal life. Then again, when you face challenges in your personal life, such as caring for an aging parent or coping with marital problems, concentrating on your job can be difficult.

Whether the problem is too much focus on work or too little, when your work life and your personal life feel out of balance, stress — along with its harmful effects — is the result.

The good news is that you can take control of your work-life balance — and give yourself the time to do the things that are most important to you.  Give yourself the gift of time to restore balance-reduce stress:

  • Take Cleansing Breaths: Three sets of deep inhalations through the nose (belly rising) and exhaling through the nose, (abdomen deflating) can (temporarily) change your physiology.
  • Stretch: Practice Office Yoga and the Moving Meditation® Fitness Program
throughout the day to release/reduce tension and increase energy.
  • Walk: A five minute walk outside can change your mood and mindset.
  • Listen to Music: A mood changer.
  • Eat Peacefully: This aids the digestion and gives you “time away”. Leave your office!
  • Allow Time: Give yourself extra time for the unexpected.
  • Smile and Laugh: Humor has been proven effective in reducing stress.

There are several worksheets in my book “SOAR! with Resilience™” that address this topic and other related ones.  Find out more about this interactive book and purchase: http://www.balanceandpower.com/soarwithresilience.php

I  attended a classy networking “cocktail party” grand opening   biz-office of a former client tonight.  I nonchalantly slipped my vities-calcium-fish oil-gall bladder supps into my mouth while holding a delicious pomegranate-white grape martini to wash them down with was commented on- we all had a laugh and I said that the they could read the blog later :) . Is this martini a little healthy? (working title for this blog).

It was heartwarming to see the success of my client- I’ve coached  her thru multiple transitions and she recently attended the  Stress Resilience for Busy People Free Teleclass Recording and gave me a lovely testimonial.  Full circles- I love that!

Recently, as a guest on Stevie Mack’s radio show I  briefly spoke about being grateful & “the kindness of strangers.” I started to reminisce  re a number of years ago when I was experiencing extreme emotional and physical challenges. ( read more about that http://www.balanceandpower.com/meeteileen.php).  I didn’t know about EFT then- I surely would’ve helped myself more and faster.  I recall what amazed me was that when I was doing  simple errands people often “bent over backwards” – a gas station attendant, for instance, and did extra little things to help. And there were a few instances when much bigger kindnesses were turned in my direction.  I would journal about them, and express gratitude.  In hindsight, I’m also grateful that I was “open” to receive what was being given- and realize that perhaps  I was given what I asking for- even if I had not verbalized it.  We all need to reach out more and to be open, receptive and grateful.  On a scale of 1-10( 10 being highest), how do you rate :

  • Kindness to strangers- how often to you notice yourself reaching out to a stranger?
  • Being grateful
  • Expressing gratitude
  • Being open to kindnesses directed at you

The radioactive scan test today showed gall bladder  is functioning 100%- with all the crazy yummy fatty stuff I ate for the “prep” last night.  Dr. Larry Good, my gastroenterologist in Lynbrook, NY.  (as fabulous as his name), said I can join the millions walking around with family stones and that my occasional vomiting symptoms over the past 6 mos. were any of virus-food poisoning-extreme stress- whew!!  So I asked what he thinks abt me having Hagen Daz – whipped cream for dessert after a high fat meal? He said he wants to help me stay trim & slim & I can have an occasional ice cream cone :)
So much for radiologists giving advice for surgery..argh!!

I’m thanking  Dr. Bruce Kesten (kinesiology, chiropractic & nutrition) and Maria Antonopoulis (acupuncturist) for all the ongoing support, nutritional supplements and gall bladder strengthening .  I will continue to tap-EFT- to pass the stones painlessly; thanks Dr.Virginia Porcello for helping me figure out the tapping phrase!

I’m still “radioactive” and cant go near children or pregnant women for 2 more days..and am carrying an ID card to that effect.

A Heartwarming Song

My daughter Ariel and her boyfriend Xabi, living in Madrid  are extremely talented musically: she sings and he plays several instruments and sings.  They each have fab “dayjobs” too~
Recently she & Xabi recorded a song to be part of a wedding gift to a friend- Xabi wrote the music to another friend’s lyrics and also plays the guitar & sings with Ariel. I got permission from them to publish this & am happy to share.  Beautiful..:
